A friend's comment on Facebook got me thinking about this, and I think it's worth a discussion. What's your favorite Batman movie, and why? And for that matter, how would you rank the others you've seen?

(Obviously, The Dark Knight Rises is not out yet. But I figured I may as well list it, and enable re-voting, since it will be out before too long.)

If you are going to include Mask of the Phantasm, you really should include, you know, every other animated film.

I considered that, but decided to limit the choices to the theatrical releases for the sake of simplicity.

Well, thus being limited, I shall have to go with The Dark Knight for so, so many reasons. I don't even see how it can really be any other one on that list, tbh. At least not yet.

It was pretty easy for me to choose a different movie, since I haven't seen The Dark Knight. :-P

Well played, sir. I now can see only one reason to chose another. :)

Y'know, if you have another one in mind out of the animated releases, you're welcome to mention it. :P

Voted Dark Knight, but I reckon Mask of the Phantasm deserves some credit. When I first watched it, I didn't think Mark Hamill could have made the Joker much creepier, but I stand corrected.

And, wow! My 500th post. o_o

Oops, I forgot to give my own order and explanations. Well then, here's my list. From favorite to least favorite:

1: The Dark Knight
2: Batman Begins
3: Mask of the Phantasm

(I should note that I actively dislike the rest of these to at least some degree.)

4: Batman (1989 Tim Burton version)
5: Batman Returns
6: Batman Forever
7: Batman and Robin
8: Batman (1966 Adam West)

The '60s Batman was a farce, pure and simple. But in all honesty I think the Burton movies, while they had an interesting atmosphere, were in some ways nearly as campy as the Adam West version. And the Joel Schumacher flicks were just fucking horrible. In my opinion the Nolan films have been the first (out of the live-action entries) to actually get the character of Batman, himself, right.

You hate the Adam West version more than Schumacher's? Yeah, I agree it was real cheesy, but at least West's version was a product of its time and helped make Batman popular in the mainstream. Schumacher was an abomination.

You may have a point.

I'd have to give that some considerable thought, as there as so many of them. Witht he list you had, the choice was pretty simple. :)

And now you see why I went with theatrical releases only.

(For the record, if I could have thought of a way to include Arkham City on that list, I would have...but I couldn't.)

Could've titled this "Favorite Feature-Length Visual Presentation Featuring Batman", then claimed that Arkham City constituted a feature.

Yeah, but then I would've also had to have included everything else that fits those parameters, and...see above. :|

Under the Red Hood would be a very strong contender for me, if you included the rest. The Batman/Superman one where there were wanted was also really good.
