Anyone else been watching it? I think it's really solid so far.

I read about it. Seems interesting, but haven't had the opportunity to watch it yet.

Well, the first season has wrapped as of last night and I can officially say that this is an outstanding series and well worth following for fans of the whole "zombie apocalypse" genre, and maybe even for some who aren't.

My only complaint right now is that the first season was only six episodes. o_o

All right, just finished watching the "mid-season finale" of season 2, which I imagine is to mark a break point until after the holiday season. And let me just say: damn.

The season got off to an incredibly intense start. Then it kind of lagged for a couple episodes. Then it picked back up.

Now, the last few minutes of this last episode were simply stunning. And the fallout from them will surely carry for the rest of the season, so that's a hell of a place to leave us.

With a new episode debuting tonight, I've got to ask if anyone else here is watching this series, and what you think about it. Personally, it's become one of my favorite shows.

I've read a lot of complaints about the second season so far. Having watched the entire series up to this point three times now, I think the second season has actually been better than the first. The characters have really begun to grow and evolve, and there are a lot of very subtle and extremely well-executed plot elements that aren't obvious at first, but become noticeable in repeated viewings, and tie together in ways I find really remarkable.

Plus, the climax of the last episode to air (s.2 ep.7, Pretty Much Dead Already) just completely blew me away.

While I have no illusions about anyone else giving a rat's ass, I'm still going to go ahead and say that I'm really looking forward to the premiere of season 3 tomorrow. :geek:

Well that completely kicked ass. The only bad thing was that shitty things keep happening to the characters I actually like. :( But I suppose even that is its own kind of compliment, in a way.

So this week...in all honesty, it was probably my least favorite character(s) out of the whole cast. But even so, Good Lord that was brutal. :(

Here's what I really like about this show, and what sets it apart from other entries in the "zombie apocalypse" genre, if you could call it that. They establish a cast of genuinely sympathetic, likeable, interesting characters, and throw them into the absolute most horrific situation imaginable. And while it's pretty much a given that you're always going to have a great deal of blood, gore, horror and suspense whenever the dead come back to eat the living, what sets The Walking Dead apart is that it focuses, perhaps even more strongly, on the sheer tragedy of the situation, and the terrible, traumatic, often heart-breaking things the survivors are forced to do to keep themselves and their loved ones alive.

The season 4 trailer from Comic-Con is much longer and packed with much more awesomeness than I was expecting it to be, for those who are interested (so, me :P ).

Holy fuckin' shit.

Tonight's episode was one of the most epic things I've ever seen on television.

Seriously, I don't even...damn. Just, damn.

In anticipation of tonight's premiere, I want to post some points of discussion that I've been meaning to comment on for some time, but...you know me and waiting 'till the last minute.

This WILL NOT CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR TONIGHT'S EPISODE.

Anyway. There are a lot of reasons this has become my current favorite show on television, among them those I've already discussed above: awesome characters, amazingly executed and often stunning plot turns, and generally excellent writing IMO. But there's another aspect of the series I find particularly interesting, and I'm not sure how widely recognized it is. That is the fact that each individual season is built around a specific, overarching theme, which is usually not fully apparent until you've seen the entire season.

[Reveal] Spoiler: The Walking Dead: Season One
In introducing the show's premise and characters, the first season's theme was, rather logically, survival. More specifically, the fact that survival is now an active choice, and the question of whether or not a person is willing to do the things it requires. This is most prominently reflected in Rick's and Merle's determination to survive at any cost, in Morgan's indecision, and Jim's, Jacqui's, Jenner's and Andrea's decisions to "opt out".

[Reveal] Spoiler: The Walking Dead: Season Two
The second season revolved around the inability, or unwillingness, of the characters to let go of things they'd lost. Carol couldn't let go of Sophia; neither, for that matter, could Rick or Daryl. Andrea wouldn't let go of her resentment toward Dale. Hershel couldn't let go of his wife, his stepson and his neighbors. Lori couldn't let go of her anger at Shane. Daryl can't let go of his insecurities. Dale couldn't let go of his idea of what defines a civilization. Rick couldn't let go of his friendship with Shane. And most of all, Shane couldn't let go of Lori.

[Reveal] Spoiler: The Walking Dead: Season Three
The third season's theme, in my view, was transformation, and/or adaptation. Right at the start, we see how dramatically all of the characters have changed since we last saw them. They've become a finely-tuned tactical unit. Carl and Maggie are now complete badasses, and even Carol, Hershel and Beth have become very adept at killing walkers. And everyone continues to change in very significant ways throughout the season. Rick has become incredibly grim, and he well and truly loses it after Lori, and never entirely gets it back. Hershel's change is both physical and involuntary (his leg), and the way he reacts to it proves his resilience. Glenn becomes much more serious and mature. Lori finally makes a good decision :P . Michonne goes from being sullen and highly guarded to making a decision to rejoin the human race, at least to some extent. Merle returns and, while he remains an antagonistic figure for the most part, ultimately redeems himself to a surprising degree. We see what Morgan has become. We watch the Governor truly become The Governor. It's worth noting, in fact, that the people who are most resistant to changing are Andrea and Milton, and...well, that ultimately doesn't work out very well, does it.

[Reveal] Spoiler: The Walking Dead: Season Four
And finally, the theme of the current season is clearly redemption. More specifically, it's forgiveness. Rick's inability to forgive himself for the mistakes he's made. Carl's uncertainty about whether Rick will ever forgive him for the things he said and did at the end of Season 3. Michonne's refusal to forgive the Governor. Bob's inability to forgive himself for what happens to Zach (which stands in odd contrast to Beth's outward indifference). Rick's unwillingness to forgive Carol for Karen and David. Daryl's unwillingness to forgive Bob for choosing the bottle. And the Governor's refusal to forgive anyone. And on the other hand, Rick's and Tyreese's decision to forgive each other, and Hershel's and Rick's willingness to forgive the Governor, for the sake of everyone's safety. And going forward, the remaining questions of whether Tyreese will forgive Carol, or whether Carl will forgive Rick.

Well... that was probably the worst episode I've seen of the show to date.

Lets take the character I hate most, make the episode 95% about him, and make you hate him even more. Yup, great episode.

That doesn't make it a bad episode by definition, that just makes it an episode that you might as well skip. :P
