Carcass was the first death metal band I really got into. Their guitar work was much more complex, melodic, and just plain interesting than a lot of other bands at the time such as Cannibal Corpse, Obituary, Six Feet Under, etc. I think it helped to pave the way for the Swedish style of "melodic death metal" to come later, as personified by bands such as Hypocrisy, At The Gates, In Flames and Arch Enemy.
