Re: Avengers: Endgame

Sorry I haven't replied to this yet; I got distracted by the impending demise of my car, among other things, and forgot about it. Anyway, I'm mostly in agreement with your overall assessment of the movie. It was a very satisfying and fulfilling culmination of everything that had come before i...

Re: Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

I think you've both kind of alluded to the reasons Revenge of the Sith very narrowly edges out Return of the Jedi , for me. What it really comes down to is that after Tattooine, Jedi almost seems to split into at least three completely different and largely unrelated movies. There's the Rebel fleet ...

Re: Easter massacre in Sri Lanka

Nothing I've seen indicates this was a revenge attack for Christchurch. 24 hour news media is jumping to conclusions and tying unrelated events to one another. But I wouldn't have thought Sri Lanka would have a terror attack on Christians by Islamic extremists. And yet, that's exactly what happened...

Re: Easter massacre in Sri Lanka

Sri Lankan intelligence has named a local cleric, Moulvi Zahran Hashim, as the suspected mastermind behind this attack, the death toll of which has climbed to 321. ISIS has claimed responsibility as well, of course, and also that this massacre was supposedly a retaliation for the recent shootings a...

Easter massacre in Sri Lanka

A series of coordinated suicide bombings at several Catholic churches and hotels in Sri Lanka on Easter Sunday have left at least 290 Christians dead, and an additional 450 500 injured. While no one has, to my knowledge, claimed responsibility at this point, we have seen this scenario play out enou...

Re: Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

On a related topic, Phiend asked me to rank all of the Star Wars movies in order of my personal preference. After much thought, I have arrived at the following order: Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back Episode IV: A New Hope Episode III: Revenge of the Sith Episode VI: Return of the Jedi Episode II:...

Re: Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

Regardless of how this movie turns out, however, I think one thing has already been proven: Disney should never have cut George Lucas out of the loop. Whatever you might think about him personally, whatever your opinion of the prequel trilogy might be, the fact remains that he created Star Wars . S...

Re: Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

If Abrams manages to salvage the storyline and pull off a satisfying conclusion for all nine movies, I would definitely be impressed. I know it's an extraordinarily tall order, and I certainly don't know that he's up to the task...but I'm willing to wait and see. I can tell you right now: he's not....

Re: Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker

I also have very... mixed feelings about Episode VIII, to put it mildly. (In hindsight, I must confess that I think my initial review was overly generous, again putting it mildly.) I'm not quite at the "it ruined Star Wars forever" point with it that you are, but perhaps I'm clinging to a futile sen...

Re: Joker

Besides, the Joker has been given an origin story in cinema before. Remember Jack Nicholson? Yes, that's why I have reservations. :P I do agree with your idea about the whole thing possibly being just another bullshit story he's concocted, but the trailer really doesn't convey that impression...of ...

Re: Joker

It does look interesting, and Joaquin Phoenix is a hell of an actor. But I have to confess that I have somewhat mixed feelings about them doing a "definitive" origin story for the Joker. It could take away one of the foundational aspects of his character, which is the uncertainty of no one ever trul...

Re: R.I.P. Dan Howard, AKA kuroitora

I feel like I should make one additional comment about his art , having watched his style evolve over more than 20 years. Yes, he had a great deal of talent, but that wasn't what made him the best artist I knew. That was due to self-discipline and working his ass off, constantly practicing and conti...

R.I.P. Dan Howard, AKA kuroitora

Man, I am absolutely stunned by this news. I just found out that our own kuroitora died of pneumonia today. I've known this guy since the mid-'90s. I met him through the online Bubblegum Crisis fan community, then met him in person during my visit to Baltimore in '99. I considered him a very good an...

Re: Avengers: Endgame

We're now officially in Endgame Month, and as the movie's release date inches closer we have yet another new trailer.

This one is much shorter than the previous ones, but it's made up almost entirely of completely new footage.
