COOOOOOOOOOOOOOL
Josh Boone to write and direct new X-Men spinoff, The New Mutants

The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone will co-write and direct The New Mutants, an expansion of the X-Men universe for Fox. Boone, a longtime comic-book fan, pitched the film along with a new comic-book for the series, and sources familiar with the project say the film will be based on the 1980s run of the Marvel comic, and that tonally it will be—”John Hughes meets Stephen King”—leaning towards horror and the supernatural.

Knate Gwaltney will co-write the script. Producer Simon Kinberg told Deadline, which broke the story, “We’re so excited to explore this part of the X-Men universe, and so excited to do it with Josh, who is uniquely suited to tell this story about young characters.”
I'm very excited about this, several of my very favorite X-Men characters originated in the New Mutants roster. It would also be extremely interesting if Magneto ends up being the team's leader/mentor/guardian, the way he originally was in the comics.

Although the status of the "main" X-Men film franchise is slightly up in the air right now, this project is continuing to move forward, slowly but steadily.
New X-Men Spinoff Casts Two Characters
New Mutants finds actors to play Wolfsbane and Magik.

The X-Men spinoff film New Mutants is moving forward and has now signed two actors.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Split) have joined the film. Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) is directing, with production set to begin in July.

The movie follows teen characters Moonstar, Wolfsbane, Sunspot, Cannonball, Magik, and Warlock. Williams is lined up to play Wolfsbane, who is apparently struggling to "reconcile her religious beliefs with her power to turn into a wolf." Taylor-Joy is playing Magik, the sister of Colossus who has teleportation powers.

It has been reported that the movie might be a departure from the more traditional superhero action of the other X-Men films, with a story in ComingSoon describing it as a "teen horror movie." This ties into comments made last year by X-Men producer Simon Kinberg, who said that it would have "its own unique, original voice."
In December, an animatic of a potential action sequence from the movie was released, the authenticity of which was confirmed by Boone.

New Mutants opens on April 13, 2018.
Rahne "Wolfsbane" Sinclair, the tortured Scottish lycanthrope, is one of my top five personal favorite characters out of the entire extended X-Men roster. So I'm very interested to see how this turns out.

So, fully five years after it was first announced, this movie has finally come out. And I'm pleased to say that I think it was worth the wait. It's easily the best X-Men movie since Logan and Days of Future Past, which is fitting since it will probably be the final X-Men movie until Marvel reboots the franchise within the MCU.

It's a shame it probably won't be much of a hit, because it's pretty unorthodox for what it is. It's a comic book movie that isn't a comic book movie; or at least, not what you'd expect an X-Men spinoff movie to be. It's a much more personal story that is told on a much smaller scale, with a cast of only half a dozen characters. But that cast is fantastic in their roles, and on a personal note, these have always been some of my very favorite characters in the entire X-Men universe, and I'm simply giddy to finally see them get a proper film all their own, as opposed to yet another lame two-second cameo in one of the "bigger" movies. Especially since they are some of the more obscure characters from the comics.

While they still have yet to do Jubilee justice on the big screen, at least they gave me Rahne, Sam, Ilyana, Dani and 'Berto. (Edit: And Lockheed!) And frankly, that's more than I ever expected.
