Thanks to Comic-Con, we're suddenly buried in new trailers. Here's one I definitely can't resist sharing.

Thoughts?

Personally, the preachy narrative is a bit much for me, I hope the full movie doesn't land as hard on that as this trailer did...Godzilla has always had that symbolism and subtext, of course, but it works best when "shown, not told" if you know what I mean.

Having said that, I am still excite.

There is actually a third trailer that's been out for a couple weeks, and while much shorter than the first two, it actually contains quite a lot of new footage.

I mean, I'm going to see it for sure because it's Godzilla. But I'm not as easily impressed with the fancy CGI nowadays. I've been burnt one too many times. haha

This movie does not disappoint.

I spent the past month watching nearly every previous Godzilla movie that's ever been made, starting with the 1954 original and finishing with KotM's 2014 predecessor. And I am so glad that I did, because there are sooo many little callbacks, easter eggs and homages to the Toho films that would otherwise have gone completely over my head. And interestingly, with its much faster-moving plot and larger cast, this one actually feels a lot more like a Toho movie than the last one did.

I'm also here to tell you that out of all 35 Godzilla movies, King of the Monsters ranks among the very best, and in my opinion, it may even be a strong contender for the best. Of course, I am saying this as a recently-revived Godzilla junkie, so by all means take that into account. But I will explain my reasoning.

Does the movie have flaws? Certainly. The plot is somewhat rushed, rather glaringly so in places, and it has a number of significant holes in it. Many of its twists and turns are either entirely predictable, completely illogical, or a combination of the two. And most of the human characters are two-dimensional and/or simply unlikable.

I will readily admit that for most movies, these would be fatal flaws. But in this movie, they ultimately do not matter once you understand a simple, obvious truth: that all of these things exist for a singular purpose, and that is to showcase these legendary, beloved monsters, in all their epic and newly-rendered glory. This movie understands this, and this is where it succeeds, magnificently, and perhaps even more so than the previous film did. The depictions of each of the four "main" monsters are nothing short of awe-inspiring, as they should be, and seeing Toho's classic characters in action once again, but this time translated into hyper-realistic CG models, is immensely satisfying. Particularly if you're a fan. ;)

Oh, and the one, particular classic Godzilla element that was conspicuously absent from the 2014 movie? It's here, and the way it's used is glorious...but I'm not going to spoil it. :P
